May 9: A's Win Third Walk-Off Game In A Row, Rangers' Tumble Into Abyss

The Athletics continued their string of walk-off wins. After beating the Tigers that way twice in a row, they did it again last night against the struggling Angels. Scores and boxes below, notes and links on each team if you Keep Reading.

A's 3, Angels 2

Another of the A's veterans came through last night. Jed Lowrie hit a home run in the 4th, then won the game with another home run in the 11th. Trevor Plouffe had tied the game in the 5th with a solo shot of his own. After giving up a two-run homer in the 1st, Kendall Graveman settled in and pitched seven strong innings. The A's pitchers didn't allow a run for the rest of the game.

Padres 5, Rangers 1

This series seemed like a chance for the Rangers to get it together, but instead things continue to fall apart. Starter Nick Martinez gave up four earned runs in six innings - not quality. The Rangers continue to look for answers in the second game tonight before hosting the Padres in two games in Arlington.

Astros (21-11)

The Astros play two games against the Braves today and tomorrow, but all eyes are on that sweet four-game series against the Yankees over the weekend. Now we'll find out where everyone really stands.

Are Brian McCann and Evan Gattis the best pitching duo in Astros history? Sports Illustrated says Astros and Yankees clearly the class of the American League right now. 

Angels (16-18)

Ricky Nolasco pitched a gem yesterday, but the Angels - again without Mike Trout - could not muster offense against the A's. Adding injury to insult, shortstop Andrelton Simmons was hit by a pitch on the hand and is day to day. The Angels, who continue to have a banged up pitching staff, give Alex Meyer, who was hammered in his last start against the Mariners,  another chance tonight in Oakland.

Trout should return tonight, a huge relief for Angels fans. A look at the many moves the Angels are making as Billy Eppler and the Office of the GM deal with a raft of injuries.

Athletics (15-17)

The A's were falling down the standings a week ago, now anything seems possible with this club. Somewhat overshadowed by the last at-bat heroics have been solid starting pitching from Sonny Gray and Kendall Graveman. Can Jharel Cotton continue the run tonight?

Think you don't want to miss an A's game right now? Neither do the players. Lowrie said it's his most exciting time in baseball outside of the playoffs.

Mariners (15-17)

They still look like the team most likely to take over second place this week. Tonight they begin a road trip against the Phillies and the Blue Jays. Even given the random nature of day-to-day baseball, these are teams the Mariners should beat.

Rangers (13-20)

Ugh. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram decided to mostly write about how awesome the city of San Diego is. This is 100 percent true, by the way. You should go if you haven't. Optimism is fading, cynicism setting in. The Rangers do remain the best of the last place teams. That's something. Actually, not really.
