AL West Morning Briefing: Astros Back On A Roll, Angels Win Third Straight, Mariners Slip Sliding Away

Astros (31-15)

So, I guess it was just the Cleveland Indians, after all.  With The Tribe out of town and the Detroit Tigers coming into Minute Maid, the Astros resumed the roll they've been on all season. Starter Lance McCullers Jr. extended his scoreless innings streak to 22. The Astros look to win the four-game series with Charlie Morton on the mound tonight.

Astros 6, Tigers 2

Rangers (24-22)

Andrew Cashner gave up five earned runs in five innings as the Rangers, who had won 11 of 12, lost their first game of a six-game road trip to the Boston Red Sox. On the plus side, Joey Gallo hit his 14th homer.

Red Sox 11, Rangers 6 

Angels (25-23)

The Angels kept rolling, taking the second game of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays and winning their third in a row. Matt Shoemaker pitched well until loading the bases in the 7th, when Yusmeiro Petit came in and  - in the game's most exciting moments - got out of the jam by striking out Steven Souza Jr. and Derek Norris.

Angels 4, Rays 0

Athletics (20-25)

Ugh. The combination of being at home against a non-divisional club seemed to play into the A's record so far this season - and then they lost in a scoring fest to the Miami Marlins. The homer-happy A's got dingers from Yonder Alonso, Ryon Healy and Rajai Davis, but both starter Jesse Hahn and the bullpen got hammered for 19 hits by the last-place Marlins.

Marlins 11, Athletics 9

Mariners (20-26)

Another blowout loss for the Mariners. The pitching staff gave up four homers in the rain in Washington, while the batting lineup managed just 5 hits against the Washington Nationals staff. Not a great start for this road trip, which includes two more games in Washington and a weekend series in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.
